NEW DELHI: Thirteen passengers were injured and a truck driver was killed after a dumper rammed a Delhi Transport Corporation bus barely a kilometre from Delhi Police headquarters early on Tuesday.
The bus, going from Anand Vihar to Uttam Nagar, had crossed the signal that was on blinker mode when the truck coming from Ring Road rammed it on the left side. The impact was such that the bus was tossed into the road divider grilles.
The bus passengers said that the truck driver was speeding and driving in a zigzag manner. Police suspect that the driver may have been trying to leave the city limits before the restrictions on movement of heavy vehicles came into effect.
The bus on route 740 was going towards ITO crossing from Laxmi Nagar. Around 3.15am, the truck suddenly appeared on the slip road under the flyover and drove into the bus. A part of the truck got lodged into the body of the bus. A streetlight pole at the crossing was also uprooted due to the impact.
Hearing the crash, cops from IP Estate police station across the road rushed to the spot along with security guards at Vikas Minar. The fire department was informed and the cabin of the truck had to be cut open to pull out the driver, Karan Singh (36), after nearly half an hour. He was taken to Lok Nayak Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The passengers — Mamta Singh (45), Munni Devi (40), Chandni (22), Seema (44), Reshma Devi (25), Meera Devi (55), Kanhaiya Lal (42), Pradeep Singh (56), Sulaiman Ali (22), Rajbir Singh (34) and Pan Chinwar (38) — were rescued through the driver’s exit and the front door of the bus.
