The old tourism law was enacted in 1993 permitted the government to manage hotels and tourism services.
But the new tourism law starting from September 2018 will allow the private sector to handle the hotels and tourism services. The Nay Pyi Taw Council Area will have the power to look after the sector’s services.
There are several intellectuals and private sector representatives in the newly formed NTDCC.
There will be greater cooperation and coordination for tourism development between the government departments and the private sector.
Visitors from Japan and South Korea are already exempted from visa and there is the facility of visa-on-arrival from those in China and India.
In 2018 the tourist arrivals in Myanmar was more than 3.55 million showing an increase of 3.5 per cent in comparison to 2017.
Community-based tourism should be further promoted by the state and ensure sustainability of existing tourist attraction. More travel destinations should be explored and attract local and foreign investment.
