Pak, India shoot down each others’ aircrafts; Indian pilot missing

India has shot one Pakistani aircraft while Pakistan brought down one Indian Air Force fighter plane in an aerial engagement following the neighbouring country's attempt to target Indian military installations on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs has said.

One Indian pilot has gone missing and Pakistan has claimed that he is in its custody, the statement said.

"Against India's counter terrorism operation (on Tuesday), Pakistan has responded this morning using its airforce to target military installations on the Indian side. Due to our high state of readiness and alertness, Pakistan's attempts were foiled successfully. The Pakistan airforce was detected and the Indian air force responded instantly," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a statement read out to the media on Wednesday.

In the aerial engagement one Pakistan Air Force aircraft was shot down by a Mig 21 Bison of the Indian Air Force. The Pakistan aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side, the statement said.

"In this engagement we have unfortunately lost one Mig 21. The pilot is missing in action. Pakistan claims he is in their custody. We are ascertaining the facts," the statement added.

India had informed about counter terrorist action it had taken yesterday targeting training camps of banned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad on credible evidence that the terror group planned to launch more attacks against India.

The strike carried out against JeM camps in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in the early hours of Tuesday was also in response to the terror attack by the group in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir, earlier this month which killed at least forty jawans of the CRPF.
