Rajkot: An engineer from Vallabhipur municipality of Bhavnagar district was caught accepting Rs 65,000 bribe by Bhavnagar anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Wednesday.
The accused was identified as Hardik Patel, a resident of Bhavnagar.
According to the Bhavnagar ACB officials, Patel had asked the complainant, a builder, to give him the bribe to approve the construction plan of 50 bungalows including shops in Vallabhipur.
According to the government norms, every builder has to pay fees between Rs 400 and Rs 500 for construction of a shop and a house. However, Patel had allegedly demanded Rs 7,500 per construction, totalling Rs 3.75 lakh, which he later scaled down to Rs 2.9 lakh.
“The complainant had paid Rs 2.25 lakh to Patel. While he was supposed to pay the remaining amount of Rs 65,000, he decided to approach the ACB. We asked him to call Patel at Himalaya Mall in Bhavnagar, where he was caught red-handed accepting the bribe,” said Z G Chauhan, inspector with the Bhavnagar ACB.
