Vadodara: The rural police on Monday arrested three scamsters who cheated around 350 women from villages around the city.
The accused Amit Parmar, Jairaj Patel and Jigar Patel used to promise home loans to the victims under government loan schemes, but disappeared after taking processing fees. The trio was arrested on Monday after 12 women registered a complaint against them at Vadodara Taluka police station.
According to police, the accused operated from offices at different locations under their company’s name – Sainath Finance Corporation. They had approached women from lower income group in surrounding villages and areas on the peripheries of the city to help them get housing loan of Rs 1 lakh under Vajpayee government loan.
The victim used to get lured as they were told that they would have to repay only Rs 70,000 while the remaining Rs 30,000 would be paid by the government. The victims were also told that their loans would be processed by just paying Rs 1,200 and they would have to pay Rs 1,400 every month towards loan repayment.
Police said that they would target groups of women so that they could get money in huge amount. “After taking the processing fee, they would shut their office which would be out of a rented shop and open a new office in another location,” said senior sub-inspector Jaideep Barot of Vadodara Taluka police station.
While the complaint was received by just 12 victims, the accused admitted that they have conned at least 350 women from villages like Ankhol, Sindhrot and Angadh among others. Forty more women are expected to give their statements to police on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the trio was remanded to police custody for three days for further investigation.
