MAHE to start certificate course in drug abuse counseling

Manipal: The Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal will start a six-month certificate programme in alcohol and drug abuse counseling on March 23, under the newly established Centre for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances. One contact class will be held every Saturday. The admission requirement is a bachelor’s degree.
Dr G Shreekumar Menon who is heading the Centre said that the course will serve as an introduction to the field of alcohol and drug abuse counseling. He added, “The course will help to deepen the understanding of substance use disorders, to facilitate the development of addiction counseling competencies that are associated with positive treatment outcomes, providing substance abuse evaluation, education and treatment services”.
The objectives of the course are to: Develop an understanding of the physical, psychological and social effects of Narcotics and Psychotropic drugs on the user and society; Familiarization with the range of drug rehabilitation treatment services available; Acquire basic skills and knowledge to treat alcohol and drug use disorders.
