A public interest litigation petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday sought a direction to the School Education department to remove the mandatory condition to fill columns such as religion, caste and Aadhaar number under the Educational Management Information System (EMIS).

The petitioner, advocate V. Janaki of Madurai, said that EMIS, an online mandatory registration ofdetails of schools and students, required one-time registration at the entry level.

Apart from details of parents, house address and income of parents, it also mandates the filling up of columns such as religion, caste and Aadhaar. She sought a direction to the department to do away with the condition to fill these columns.

A Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S. S. Sundar ordered notice to the School Education department and adjourned hearing in the case.
