President of Australian Bishops says news of Cardinal Pell conviction has shocked many

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

Speaking at a residence close to the Vatican, the President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Mark Colderidge said on Tuesday (February 26) that "our hope at all times is that through this process justice will be served," upon news of the conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell on child sexual abuse charges.

Colderidge's words came two days after the end of a Vatican four-day summit dealing with the protection of minors.

An Australian court found Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican Treasurer and a former top adviser to Pope Francis, guilty on five charges of child sexual offences committed more than two decades ago against 13-year-old boys.

Pell becomes the most senior Catholic clergyman worldwide to be convicted for child sex offences.

He had pleaded not guilty to all five charges.
