Indore: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur faculty Prof Vinod Tare, who led consortium of IITs and other institutes for studies on Ganga, suggested that Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) should set up sewerage treatment plants in city’s centre to feed Kanh and Saraswati rivers.
“Treated water from these and other sewerage plants should be released into the twin river so that they do not dry up in any season,” he said during a review meeting held on Kanh and Sarawasti river rejuvenation project here on Monday. Tare said IMC should ensure that water from sewerage plants is used within the city limit.
Earlier, Tare inspected ongoing cleanliness works on Kanh and Saraswati rivers near Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalay and Nahar Bhandara. He commended cleanliness works and IMC’s efforts in treating sewage water. “To make rivers flow throughout the year, it is necessary to feed them and there can’t be a better artificial source than sewerage plants,” said Tare.
He also advised civic authorities to make long-term plans keeping requirement of water after 10 to 15 years. According to Tare, saplings should be planted on a large scale. He advocated less use of concrete till required.
Mayor Malini Gaud said IMC would consider Tare’s advice as civic body is keen to revive Kanh and Saraswati rivers. “There used to be a time when the water of these rivers was crystal clear. We will make it as clear as crystal once again,” she said. She told Tare that IMC constructed stop dams on rivers and repaired old ones on experts’ advice.
