CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday requested external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj to ensure the immediate release and repatriation of three Indian fishermen detained by the Iranian Coast Guard.
In a letter to Sushma, the chief minister said the fishermen belonged to Kanyakumari district and were employed as fishing labourers in a mechanised fishing boat belonging to a Saudi national.
“They seem to have ventured for fishing from Tharine fishing base of Saudi Arabia on January 2. While fishing in the sea, they were abducted by smugglers, who abandoned them off the coast of Busher in Iran on January 1. The three abandoned fishermen were rescued by Iranian coast guard and detained in Busher, Iran,” the CM said.
Palaniswami requested Sushma to take necessary steps and ensure that the fishermen received their just and due wages from their Saudi employer.
