Target issues an urgent recall of 21 models of tricycle strollers for toddlers amid safety concerns - and they've been sold over an 11-year period

  • Target has issued a nationwide recall of 21 models of tricycle strollers for kids
  • The 'SmarTrike' trikes were sold over an 11-year period between 2007 and 2018
  • The product did not have a parking brake, tether strap or relevant warnings
  • Children who use the unsafe trike are at risk of falling out and getting injured

Target has issued a nationwide recall of 21 models of tricycle strollers for young children sold over an 11-year period.

A warning released by the department store says the 'SmarTrike' tricycles, sold between May 2007 and July 2018, were unsafe for use as they did not have a parking brake, tether strap or relevant warnings.

The trike may cause injury to a child if the product rolls in an uncontrollable manner, which may cause the child to fall out.

The trikes did not have relevant warnings as required by the mandatory standard of the Trade Practices Act 1974 Consumer Protection Notice No. 8 of 2007, which looks at the Consumer Product Safety Standard for Prams and Strollers.

Customers should immediately stop using the product as a stroller to transport children .

Those who have bought the item at a Target store can return it with a full refund, without the need of a receipt for proof of purchase.

Customers who purchased the SmarTrike trikes from retailers other than Target are advised to contact their supplier for advice.

The recall follows an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in 2018 into tricycles sold by a number of retailers.

'At Target Australia, the safety of our customers is our highest priority,' a statement on the department store's Facebook page said.

'Target ceased selling those products when the investigation began in mid-2018 and is now recalling them, together with some tricycle models'.
