CHENNAI: Fourteen transgender people on Tuesday received allotment orders to occupy units in tenements constructed by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) on a rental basis at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.

A press release said 255 transgender people had been allocated new tenements on a rental basis out of the total 2,048 units constructed under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.

The department of housing and urban development issued an order in this regard in December last year. Each unit will have a drawing room, kitchen, toilet, besides drinking water and electricity facilities.

Deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam issued the allotment orders to 14 transgenders on Tuesday. Senior officials from the housing and urban development department and TNSCB were also present on the occasion.
