Low-cost carrier AirAsia has plans to open a restaurant named “Santan” that will serve meals based on its in-flight menu of the same name, the airline’s boss has said.
AirAsia Group CEO, Tony Fernandes, was speaking on Larry King Live, though he didn’t specify a timeline or location for the restaurant.
“I think our food is fantastic. We believe in it so much we’re going to start a fast-food restaurant out of it,” said Fernandes.
Santan, named after coconut milk, is the airline’s in-flight menu and offers “a wide selection of Asean, international and vegetarian options”, according to AirAsia’s website. Meals are available to pre-book up to 24 hours prior to scheduled flight times, but do not come included in the price of the ticket.
Among the dishes served as part of the Santan menu are nasi lemak, chicken teriyaki with rice, butter chicken with rice, and mapo tofu with rice, among others. A full list of dishes can be viewed here.
Fernandes also alluded to ongoing developments to the airline’s seats.
“I think we have a good product,” he said. “We’re working on seat technology all the time. Boeing is working on better cabin pressure so it feels better.”
AirAsia’s long-haul arm, AirAsia X, notably offers a lie-flat seat in its Premium Flatbed class on board its Airbus A330 aircraft.
The carrier earlier this month announced it would be launching non-stop flights between Bangkok and Brisbane using the aircraft on June 25.
