Audi E-Tron Spied Testing, Could Be 3-Motor Performance Version

Word on the street is Audi is working on two new versions for its e-tron battery-powered SUV.

One of them will focus on improving off-road abilities and might be labeled “Allroad.” As for the other one, it is said to be a more powerful version that will deliver improved performance. Whatever it is, Audi is clearly testing something new for the e-tron, otherwise the carmaker wouldn’t go through the trouble of shipping a prototype to Scandinavia for cold weather testing.

The mystery Audi e-tron prototype was snapped during testing, displaying camouflaged front and rear ends, fenders, and sills. We can’t really spot new developments under the bedazzling tape but it’s obvious this particular test vehicle previews some styling updates.

Since the prototype doesn’t feature a noticeably higher ground clearance or other additional off-road details, we’re inclined to believe it’s the more powerful version.

Details about said model are scarce but Audi itself may have offered a clue about it last week when it announced that a modified e-tron had climbed a ski slope with an 85-percent gradient. That particular vehicle featured extensive modifications including an additional electric motor to the existing two.

Equipped with two motors on the rear axle and one on the front, the prototype had a combined output of 370 kW (503 PS/496 hp) — almost 100 hp more than the standard e-tron. It remains to be seen whether the production version will feature the same three-motor setup. Along with the added muscle, the upcoming e-tron version is also expected to get a slightly sportier appearance.
