Firefighters managed to cut the rod down so the woman could be removed from her vehicle and treated by paramedics.

'The driver was conscious when he [emergency services] arrived,' Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Greg Stewart told news.com.au.

'Obviously [the driver] was in a bit of distress, but not so much pain, and she was very cooperative and able to help us out.'

The woman was in a critical condition and was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital after a stopover at Toowoomba Hospital for blood supply.

Police continue to investigate the incident and have yet to locate the other driver.

The highway was briefly closed with diversions via Brimblecombe Road and Oakey-Biddeston Road until emergency services cleared the scene.
