PATIALA: In a covert operation carried out at a paying guest accommodation near the Punjabi University campus, late last evening, the Patiala police have managed to arrest two key aides of gangsters of Dilpreet Baba and Harvinder Singh Rinda.

The two accused identified as Mankirat Singh alias Mani, 30, and Daljeet Singh alias Dalli, 32, had helped gangster Dilpreet Baba escape from police custody while he was being taken back to the Ropar jail after a court hearing at Jalandhar, in May 2016.

Baba had opened fire at Punjabi singer Parmish Varma to extort money and was arrested by the Mohali police from Chandigarh in July last year.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that both Mankirat and Daljit were also in touch with A-category gangster Harvinder Singh Rinda.

It was learnt that the crime investigating agency (CIA) of the Patiala police had received a tip off, following which incharge Shaminder Singh led an operation at the paying guest accommodation near Punjabi University on Sunday evening.

The SSP said that the two accused had arrived in Patiala about 10 days back and had taken shelter at the PG along with other students. As the police raid was carried out discreetly, the two gangsters did not get an chance to retaliate even as they were in possession of arms and ammunition.

The police have recovered two country-made weapons and live cartridges from them.

SSP said that during preliminary questioning, Mankirat confessed that he along with Rinda had helped Dilpreet Baba escape from police custody in May 2016. After committing the crime he escaped to Malaysia and then visited Dubai thrice before coming back to India in October, last year.

It was learnt the accused Daljit had tried to sneak into the United States of America in 2012 through illegal means, but was caught near Mascot border and was deported back to India the same here.

Sidhu said that two managing to leave the country despite having several cases registered against them was a matter of concern and the police was trying to get to the bottom of this.

Meanwhile, the two were produced before a local Court on Monday afternoon which sent them in police custody for 5 days.
