History sheeters’ prints now available at a touch

PUNE: City police can now match fingerprints from a crime scene with 6.5 lakh history sheeters of Maharashtra state. This will help to catch a criminal, in case he is a repeated offender.

The solution has been designed by Smartchip India Private Limited and the software is called  Maharashtra enrolment service application.

Elaborating about the automation solution, city Police Commissioner K Venkatesham said the software will be provided to all police stations in the city.

“A police official at the spot can scan for the fingerprints at the crime scene and in case of a match, the software will fetch details of the offender and reflect the same to the police officials. This will help police officials in speeding up the investigation,” added Venkatesham.

Police have called the process ‘automated multi modal biometric identification system’. Currently,  the software has biometric data of 6.5 lakh criminals on police record, with 2.5 lakh from Pune.

Detecting and scanning for fingerprints at the crime scene is one of the toughest jobs involving forensic experts who have to collect the fingerprints from the scene before it is contaminated. Each fingerprint pattern is unique to a specific person, and therefore can be a reliable way of identifying a suspect.
