AGRA: Prisoners of Agra District Jail will now create “eco bricks” by stuffing PVC (polyvinyl chloride) bottles with ploythene and other discarded pieces of plastic. These bricks will be used to build benches and toilets in parks.

On Sunday, members of the citizen group “Agra Vikas Manch” and the non-government organization (NGO) “Unfold foundation” demonstrated preparation of eco bricks to the inmates of Agra district jail.

Talking to TOI, superintendent of Agra district jail, Shashikant Mishra said, “Prisoners are excited to know about an innovative way to reuse plastic and have assured us of their participation in the project. Ten women and 15 men inmates learnt to make eco bricks out of empty cold drink and mineral water bottles at a workshop organized by a team of environment activists and social workers on Sunday. Besides a smart use of plastic, the initiative will also play a crucial role in reforming prisoners.”

President of Agra Vikas Manch and city-based philanthropist Ashok Jain said, “We have made a contract with the administration of the district jail of Agra to support the eco brick project. We will pay Rs 4 for every eco-brick made using one liter PVC bottle and Rs 5 for those made using 2 liter bottles. The funds will distributed among prisoners on the basis of their contribution.”

Social worker Poonam Lahoti said, “Prisoners are also human beings and loneliness causes them mental stress. They were happy to have an opportunity to contribute towards the conservation of the environment.”

Coordinator of the Unfold foundation and city-based surgeon Dr Meeta Kulsherstha said, “Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance. It harms the environment and human beings alike. Through the eco-brick project, we are trying to curb plastic menace. Eco-bricks can be prepared by stuffing any empty PVC bottle with dry polythene, plastic pieces and packing material. The bottle becomes rock solid after it is sealed air-tight and can stay the same for over 500 years.”

She added, “We have recently set up a bench at Lajpat Nagar park using 300 eco-bricks. Other parks of the city will also be covered under the project. Eco-bricks can also be used to develop toilets, stairs, drains, tree guards etc.”

Social workers Sandesh Jain and Sunil Jain have appealed people to donate waste plastic bottles, so that they can be converted into eco-bricks.
