AHMEDABAD: In a recent directive, Gujarat University has decided to give admission to the children of martyrs, free of cost. With this initiative, children of martyrs will be able to take education for free at any of the GU-affiliated institutes. The decision will be implemented with effect from the upcoming academic year 2019-20, at the varsity.

More than 35 different courses are offered by GU-affiliated institutions, wherein the fees ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 50,000 per annum.

“The university has a policy of granting admissions to children of ex-army men in such special cases on a supernumerary basis with a 2% quota. However, if a student fails to get admission under this quota, the child of the army personnel, will need to qualify in the merit list, to be able to get admission. The university will then waive off the academic fees,” said GU Vice Chancellor, Himanshu Pandya.

“Apart from financial support which is provided to families of injured and deceased armed-forces personnel through donations, it is our duty to extend help otherwise too. We have taken a step in this direction,” he added.

Apart from GU, some 25 out of 45 schools affiliated with the Association of Progressive Schools (APS) – Ahmedabad, has also taken a similar decision. As part of this, the child of the martyr will be able to take education in any of these 25 APS-affiliated schools, without paying any fees.

“It is not just the admission fees that the schools will be waiving off, the school will also sponsor the education of the students till class 12 concerned,” said Manana Choksi, president, APS – Ahmedabad.

Even Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has extended financial support to the families of the deceased armed-forces personnel. “Through donations collected from students, faculty members and staffers from various GTU-affiliated institutions, we will be able to donate a sum of at least Rs 50 lakh to the families,” said Navin Sheth, vice chancellor, GTU.

“That apart, in the upcoming academic council meeting of the varsity, we will also discuss on how the university can provide further assistance for education of children of the armed forces personnel,” he added.
