RANCHI/HAZARIBAG: The Raghubar Das government on Sunday hosted an elaborate programme in Ormanjhi to mark the launch of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

On the occasion, chief minister Raghubar Das said in the first phase, 5.20 lakh small and marginalized farmers of the state will receive Rs 2,000 in their bank accounts through direct benefit transfer (DBT) provision of the scheme. He also handed over cheques to 12 farmers hailing from Ranchi, Ramgarh, Simdega, Khunti and Gumla districts. In Gorakhpur, Modi handed over the cheque to Indra Narayan Khushwaha, a farmer from Dalgawan village of Katkumdang block in Hazaribag.

Speaking to TOI over the phone Khushwaha said, “It was a proud moment for me. I am a third generation farmer and I share this honour with the people of Hazaribag.”

Nationally, the PM-Kisan scheme promises annual financial grant of Rs 6,000 in three instalments to small and marginalised farmers having land ownership of up to five acres through DBT to help them purchase seeds, procure farming equipment and others without taking loans. State agriculture secretary Puja Singhal said around 22 lakh farmers of the state will benefit from the scheme. “The scheme is in effect from December 1, 2018. So, it was the first instalment of the grant which is being paid today,” Singhal said.

In December last year, the state government had also announced that it would roll out the Mukhyamantri Krishi Ashirvad Yojana, under which the farmers small and marginalised farmers would be provided Rs 5,000 per acre annually. The scheme is likely to be rolled out after the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking on the occasion, Das urged the farmers to take up cooperative farming. He said, “Countries like Israel and China are making rapid progress through cooperative farming and they have adopted modern technology like drip irrigation. In Jharkhand, farmers own small lands, hence, cooperative farming will help and use of technology will increase production. We will gradually push for these changes.”

Das also announced that his government will give 70% subsidies to cooperatives which wanted to procure farming equipment. “Our aim is increase incomes of farmers by four times by 2022,” he added.

State agriculture minister Randhir Kumar Singh, other senior officers of agriculture, animal husbandry and cooperative departments along with a few hundred farmers from Ranchi and neighbouring areas, attended the event.
