Thiruvananthapuram: Attempts to curb the freedom of expression and intolerance towards dissent should be opposed strongly, said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Monday. He was delivering the inaugural address at the valedictory function of Festival on Democracy, the National Students’ Parliament - Kerala 2019, at Nishagandhi Auditorium.

The three-day event was organised as part of diamond jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Around 2,000 students from across the country participated in the event.

“The young generation have the responsibility to uphold and propagate the values of democracy,” said Vijayan.

“Democracy survives on secularism. But, you see growth of violence, moral policing and child abuse. If you want to safeguard the future, you will have to work for a better future,” said CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury who also attended the valedictory. “It is high time that we take corrective action. People feel that parliamentarians and legislators are not working properly,” said former KPCC president V M Sudheeran. Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan presided over. tnn
