Sierra Leone is all geared up to draw more eco-tourists

Recently, the Sierra Leone National Tourist Board and Ministry of Tourism told the press at World Travel Market in London that the country is gradually altering its narrative and improving its national image. Also, the minister mentioned that for tourism, Sierra Leone has high hopes to turn out to be the country’s lead industry.

In an age where travelers are more and more keen on off-the-beaten-track, unknown and authentic experiences, Sierra Leone rightly checks all the boxes.

The country is known for its long stretches of empty and never-ending beaches, unique cultural experiences with exotic wildlife. According to locals, the most beautiful beach in Africa can be found near Tokeh.

On the Western Area Peninsula, Tokeh is a small coastal village where locals, on fishing trips are always happy to attract tourists to be a part, showing them how to smoke fish; or inviting them to have a drink in the Palm wine Bar.

Tokeh has large holiday resort called “The Place,” (Photo: Below) and there are other accommodations available, as well.

Sierra Leone’s 250 miles of immaculate Atlantic shoreline has many little “hidden” islands: Sherbro is the biggest, as the three Banana Islands lie just across from Freetown.

Bunce Island is a massive natural harbour in Freetown, is the most developed, and the Turtle Islands are the most unspoiled.

Sierra Leone’s islands show unbelievable possibilities when it comes to eco-tourism. For instance, the formerly forgotten Tasso Island lies at the heart of one of the most precious wetlands of Africa, the Sierra Leone River Estuary.
