Mindy Kaling brought B.J. Novak as her date to the Vanity Fair Oscars viewing party on Sunday night
Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak‘s friendship seems to be stronger than ever!
During the 91st Annual Academy Awards on Sunday evening, Kaling attended the Vanity Fair Oscars viewing party with her longtime friend and ex-boyfriend Novak.
It was the second consecutive year that the former flames have attended the bash together, despite calling off their relationship years ago.
As they headed over to the party, Kaling, 39, sweetly bantered with her former The Office costar Novak, 39, in the car and shared the video on Instagram.
“Happy Oscars everyone! I’m in the car on the way to one of several parties tonight with my good friend,” she said, panning the camera to him.
“You told me this was Grammys stuff!” Novak, sporting a traditional black suit, jokingly responded.
“Why would we be going to the Grammys?” Kaling said with a laugh, prompting Novak to quip back, “I don’t know, why am I going to the Oscars?”

In a second video, which was recorded inside of the Vanity Fair Oscars viewing party, Kaling explained how their evening — and dinner — were going (Kaling opted for a chicken burger and fries, while Novak chose broccoli) and revealed what the party guests were up to.
“Nobody else at this party is on their phones,” Novak pointed out, telling his friend, “We’re taking a big risk for your fans!”
Kaling, who wore a sequinned silver gown and matching silver Christian Louboutin heels, also sarcastically commented, “The night is going so well #Oscars,” and tagged Novak in the post.
Like last year’s reunion, the Kaling-Novak couple fandom and Office diehards — Novak starred as Kelly Kapoor, opposite Novak’s Ryan Howard on the NBC sitcom — were hopeful the pair would rekindle their flame.
“Just get married already. Seriously you two are and always have been perfection!!!” wrote one fan on Kaling’s post.
“I really hope Kelly & Ryan are a real thing,” another fan added, referencing their Office characters.
“Why can’t you guys just be that AWESOME couple I want you to be?” said a fellow shipper.

While the duo has not been publicly or romantically linked since their days on the Steve Carrell-headlined NBC comedy, she has previously shared details about their close bond.
“I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell. He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend,” Kaling admitted to InStyle in 2015.
“I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status,” she added.
In 2014, Novak opened up to PEOPLE about his friendly – and at times romantic – relationship with his former Office costar.
“Complicated,” he said when asked to describe Kaling in one word. “A really complicated person and a really complicated friendship, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”
