The D.N. Nagar police have arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a police official and threatening a person at a club in Andheri on Saturday.
While the accused was granted bail by a holiday court on Sunday, the police said they will file a charge sheet after taking statements from witnesses.
According to the police, the incident occurred at the Andheri Recreation Club on Saturday evening, where Ishwar Advani, a resident of Four Bungalows, entered the club in a police officer’s uniform. “Another club member, who is also in his sixties, confronted Mr. Advani for staring at him. The confrontation soon sparked an argument between the two, when Mr. Advani threatened the victim and tried to attack him. Upon hearing a commotion, the club staff intervened and pulled the two apart,” police sub-inspector, Anil Rokade, D.N. Nagar police station, told The Hindu.
Meanwhile, a call was made to the Mumbai Police helpline and a team from the D.N. Nagar police station was dispatched. The police said Mr. Advani was wearing a proper police uniform, which even had a name tag attached to it. “We brought Mr. Advani to the police station and booked him for wearing the uniform of a police officer and pretending to be one, under Section 170 of the Indian Penal Code,” Mr. Rokade said.
The official said Mr. Advani is known for creating a ruckus in the club, and that his membership had recently been cancelled after he misbehaved with a woman on the premises.
“Our inquiry has revealed that six months ago, his membership was cancelled after he misbehaved with a woman. A case was registered in that incident. We do not know how and when he became a member again. Some witnesses have also told us that he is often seen gawking at women in the club,” Mr. Rokade said.
