2020 Audi S3: Sharper Looks, New Tech And More Speed For Hot Hatch

Audi is putting the final touches on the next generation A3 and S3, with the latter being spotted again during some cold-weather testing.

The new generation of the Audi compact model is going to adopt a sharper design that will bring it in line with the company’s latest models, such as the Audi Q3 and Q8. Test cars are still fully covered by a rather dizzying wrap but details of the front and rear reveal Audi’s new direction with the next A3.

The front end will of course be dominated by the brand’s hexagonal grille while the headlights will follow the same design guidelines with the Q8 flagship SUV. The rear end focuses on simpler, more elegant lines. As with all S3 models, the new will get a front bumper with bigger air intakes, deeper side sills, a set of larger alloys and quad exhaust tips.

We’ve already seen a portion of the new dashboard, which will introduce sharper lines similar to those found in the A1. Audi’s digital instrument cluster, as well as the latest infotainment systems will aim to give the new A3 the necessary high-tech ambience to fend off rivals such as the upcoming BMW 1-Series and the current Mercedes A-Class.

Four-banger turbo power

The powertrain of the new Audi S3 is expected to remain the same, meaning a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and the company’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. The power output is expected to increase slightly from the current 302hp and 295lb-ft (400Nm). The latest WLTP rules mean that the engine will come with a particulate filter as well.

As with most new hatchbacks these days, Audi will ditch the three-door bodystyle for the A3 but plans to introduce a new five-door liftback variant to the range.
