NEW DELHI: The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, for the first time organised a Film Appreciation course in Hyderabad in association with Instructional Media Centre, Moulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu).

Interacting with participants, well-known cinematographer K K Senthil Kumar said while perfect understanding between the cinematographer and director was of utmost importance, it would also be the responsibility of the cinematographer to gain the trust of the director to be in a position to make suggestions that would help tell the story in a better way. The cinematographer of ‘Bahubali’ said what would work out best should be known to the crew and this knowledge is gained through rehearsals. He said this is what was done while making ‘Bahubali’ directed by S S Rajamouli.

“At the time when there was dwindling of numbers in cinema theatres, the idea was to bring back audiences to the theatres. ‘Bahubali’ was intended to be a big screen experience and that why people flocked to the theatres to watch it,” he explained.

With the advent of new technologies, he advised those inclined towards making cinema to make best use of them to understand the techniques of film-making. “At the end of the day, film-making is hard work and one has to be prepared to put in such hard work,” he said. Senthil Kumar recalled that he had aspired to get into the civil services but when he got into the FTII, he decided to stick to cinema as he was fascinated with the medium.

More than 80 participants were taught film aesthetics and film grammar by course directors and FTII alumni Munish Bhardwaj and Pankaj Saxena. Apart from Telangana, participants came from different states also enrolled in the course.

For aspirants of film-making, course director Pankaj Saxena said the five-day course was just a beginning to help them understand the basics of film-making. “The journey is too long. This is a medium of persistence,” he said.

Director IMC Rizwan Ahmad said the centre was in the process of starting some new short-term courses on film. The centre would collaborate with FTII in organising more of the courses that it offered to be conducted in Hyderabad.
