Cricket tourney to raise funds for charity
TNN | Feb 26, 2019, 04:52 ISTThiruvananthapuram: A group of young cricket enthusiasts plan to organize a cricket league in the city to collect medical fund for two boys, Anandu (6) of Mudavanmugal and Ananthu (19) of Mannanthala, who are affected by renal failure.
The tournament titled Champions Premiere League (CPL) is organized by Champions Premier League Charitable Society and will follow a pattern similar to Indian Premier League with an auction for players scheduled to take place on last week of March.
The matches will be played with tennis balls and will begin from April 20.
Mayor V K Prasanth will inaugurate the tournament, which will be held at Sree Chithirathirunal Stadium, Poojappura.
CPL president Lalu Kumar said that the main objective of the tournament was charity. “This initiative was formed as we wanted to do something to help the two youngsters who are suffering from kidney failure. As we all share a common love for cricket, we decided to host the tournament. If we get some more sponsors, we are all set for the tournament,” he said.
The winners of the tournament will bag Rs 2,22,222 with runners up getting Rs 1,11,111 as prize money. The third and fourth places will be Rs 33,333 and Rs 11,111 respectively.
The tournament is open to all and teams can register by paying Rs 1,000. 16 team owners have already registered for the tournament.
The tournament also intends to provide a platform for exposure and development of tennis ball cricket.
“There are plenty of tennis ball cricketers like Gayle Kuttapan and Poovar Kannan in the city who do not receive the recognition they deserve. The tournament also intends to provide exposure for such players and an equal opportunity for others to play along with these star players,” said CPL treasurer Sreekanth.
