The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology met Twitter officials on Monday, and asked the micro-blogging site to ensure the platform isn't used to influence politics in the country.
During the meeting, the panel asked the micro-blogging site to be especially careful ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, due for April-May this year, to ensure there isn't a repeat of the scenario witnessed during the 2016 US presidential elections. Twitter has also been asked to cooperate with the Election Commission (EC).
The panel also asked representatives of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram to attend a meeting on March 6.
Twitter's global vice-president of public policy, Colin Crowell, attended Monday's meet with other officials. BJP MP Anurag Thakur, chairman of the panel, said Twitter has been asked to engage more with EC to address cases real-time.
Twitter was also warned against exerting 'international interference' in the elections. The microblogging site will be sending a reply on a host other issues raised by the panel in the next 10 days.
