Prime Minister’s farmer scheme gimmick to win polls: Ashok Gehlot

JAIPUR: Chief minister Ashok Gehlot, on Sunday, termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s newly inaugurated farmer scheme which guarantees Rs 6,000 annually to farmers, as a futile attempt to win elections.
Addressing a press conference at his residence, Gehlot said that the union government should have instead waved off the farm loans for farmers. “Modi ji should be aware of the fact that we provide a monthly pension to farmers in Rajasthan, which sums up more than his Rs 6,000 annually,” he said, adding with inflation running high, it is left to be seen how much of a relief the centre’s financial assistance will provide.
“This is clearly an attempt made to appease farmers ahead of the upcoming polls. Election Commission (EC) needs to step up and question the government,” Gehlot said. He added that the state government had already waved off the farm loans of farmers in Rajasthan, which the BJP leaders are criticizing without having taken into account proper feedback of the scheme and the scale of its implementation.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s comments that states governed by the opposition were not cooperating, Gehlot said while the public would ultimately decide if the scheme is planned in good intentions or a poll move, the state government will still like to have all its farmers to get benefited from the scheme. “We would like to see all our farmers getting the benefits of all schemes - of the state and centre’s,” he said.
Taking a dig at Modi’s slogan ‘Modi hai toh mumkin hai’ at Tonk on Saturday, Gehlot said, “Modi hai to namumkin hai. Tell us one promise he fulfilled after becoming the Prime Minister?” he asked.
He said that PM Modi’s poll campaign has begun and rather than enumerating his government’s achievements, he is instead attacking the state’s governments. “What happened to the promises made during the last elections over black money and terrorism? They used to say that for one head (of an Indian solider) they will cut 10 heads, now there is complete silence,” he said, adding that the Union government failed on all fronts and it is unable to give proper replies on issues like Rafale deal.
