BENGALURU: Residents can now hope their daily worry about waste not being picked up from their doorstep will soon end as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched an app to monitor the movement of garbage-collecting auto-tippers.
The app will monitor the attendance and movement of the tippers. “Earlier, we could only monitor the auto-tippers manually, but there was a lot of room for manipulation,” BBMP additional commissioner D Randeep told TOI.
“A radio-frequency identification (RFID) will be tagged on the windscreen of the vehicles and it will have a QR code. The driver needs to scan the QR and then the tipper’s journey will be monitored,” said Randeep.
The BBMP has been receiving complaints on a daily basis about garbage collectors’ flawed performance. “The auto-tipper drivers often say they are going to collect garbage, but then they are never there,” said a senior BBMP officer.
“The BBMP books showed there were 4,000 auto-tippers at work, but a reality check showed that there are only 1,600. This app will monitor it,” added Randeep.
The new app will bring transparency with regard to auto-tippers and their movements. A daily update on the movement of the auto-tippers will be uploaded on the BBMP website, added Randeep.
The auto-tippers collect segregated waste from households. While wet waste is transferred to compactors at a transit point, dry waste is sent to dry waste collection centres for further segregation and recycling.
