Students at one of Australia's top universities will be forced to take a compulsory course which teaches 'a person's sex isn't assumed by gender'

  • The course is mandatory for club executives, and they need to complete it

A compulsory course which teaches students 'a person's sex is not assumed by gender' has been slammed by a pupil forced to take the module.

The controversial course which is obligatory for students who are club executives at the University of New South Wales, has been dubbed as the 'gender misconduct' course.

If a club executive fails to complete the course, the club they represent could face being disaffiliated.

One question in the mandatory course asks students to answer 'true or false' as to whether or not 'gender is assigned based on biology and sex is assumed from your gender'.

According to the presentation, which was created by the university's Gendered Violence Research Network, the answer is false, according to The Australian

As part of the teaching, the course also invites students to rate the offensiveness of the well-renowned Tony Abbott speech.

The former Prime Minister was accused of being 'misogynistic' and 'sexist' by his predecessor Julia Gillard because of his notorious speech.

It's reported that the lesson fails to show any of Mr Abbott's actual comments, only Ms Gillard's opinions of him.

The divisive lesson has come under fire from a student who claims the course is 'politicised' and 'straight from the Marxist textbook'.

Reanna Earl, the UNSW Liberal Club president, said that while she had previously undertaken similar classes about gender, she was surprised to see the module so 'politicised'.

'All we want is the freedom to have different points of view, and the freedom to support the prominent Liberal politicians like Tony Abbott.

'It's about freedom to express our ideas,' she told the publication.

A University of New South Wales spokesperson said although she was 'disappointed' to hear about Ms Earl's experiences with the module, she insisted this was not the opinion of the 'majority' of students.

She claimed the module had been developed in a bid to respond to the 'complaints around micro-aggressions'.

She also defended the question regarding gender stating it was based on the definition from the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The spokesperson insisted that the in-person session had been received well by students.

'Gender is broader than just women versus men. The module also asks women about views towards dominant ideas of masculinity,' she added.

Arc, the organisation that operates the clubs at the university, and needs club executives to complete the gender-based course, said the module was created to help the executives.

A spokesperson said the course 'assist club executives in the management of their clubs' and tackled a whole range of issues including gender misconduct.

She also noted that students are given the opportunity to amend their answers should they answer incorrectly.
