The teasing and reality-style rolling commentary from the investigators working to free convicted Hobart murderer, Sue Neill-Fraser, ramps up. With the woman's appeal hinging on the evidence of a nervous bikie's girlfriend who was 15 and homeless at the time the crime was committed, they have reason to be on edge. Former homicide cop Colin McLaren maintains his cool, but the same can't be said for his colleague, psychologist, Eve Ash. Both are clearly well beyond objectivity.

Just as the "Trump effect" has been felt by some impersonators who find they can no longer create satire funnier than the real thing, the madness of Australian morning television may be weighing somewhat on the writers and co-stars of this spoof. Yet by holding fast to their original idea, the Kates come up with a cracker of an episode this week, based around a weekend round-up of the weekday hyperbole. Their take on climate change slacktivism is a cathartic laugh.

In less self-aware times, perhaps, this collection of colour-infused footage dating from the 1800s, might be complied into a patriotic representation of an emerging nation's great achievements. Today, the video evidence of our past is used to present a broad and inclusive picture of both our proudest and most shameful legacies. It's a vivid and fascinating look back at events that shaped not just the nation but also its film industry. Hugo Weaving narrates.
