AGRA: A 38-year-old woman and her two daughters aged three and six years were found dead under suspicious circumstances in a locked bathroom at their residence in upscale Pandav Nagar locality on Sunday night.
Police suspect the victims died of asphyxiation due to a leakage in the LPG geyser, but they have been probing other angles as well.
The victims have been identified as Ritu Dhupad (38), and her daughters Kayara (3) and Sachika (6). Ritu’s husband Rohit has a garment store at Jaipur House and her parents-in-law Dr Navin Dhupad and Vimla run a drugstore. The bodies were handed over to the family after autopsy.
Station house officer (SHO) of Shahganj police station Rajeshwar Tyagi said, “During preliminary investigation, we haven’t come across any evidence that can suggest foul play— the house was locked from inside and there was no sign of trespass or confrontation among victims or with someone else.”
The incident came to light when Ritu’s mother Rajrani called Rohit around 7pm to inform him that his wife was not responding to her calls. Following which, Rohit, too, made calls to Ritu over her mobile phone, but when the calls went unanswered, he rushed to his house.
“Rohit with the help of some neighbours broke into the house through a door around 7.30pm only to find his wife and daughters lying unconscious in the bathroom. They rushed the trio to a private hospital, where doctors proclaimed them dead upon arrival,” said SHO.
Rohit said Kayara was recently admitted to a convent school and had celebrated her fourth birthday on February 27, and her elder sister Sachika was in grade one.
After the incident, Shahganj police, superintendent of police (city) and Lohamandi circle officer, along with a forensic team visited the spot.
The SHO said footages captured by CCTV cameras installed at a neighbour’s house confirmed that Ritu was last seen around 1.20pm. “Before that she was out on the colony street after her father-in-law left for pharmacy around 1.10pm. During investigation, we found a 1,000-litre water tank empty and the tap in the bathroom opened.”
“It appears that the LPG geyser in the bathroom leaked when Ritu was giving bath to the children and they died of asphyxiation. We found the LPG cylinder used in the geyser half empty. Though there is a ventilator in the bathroom, the exhaust fan was not working.”
“The victims’ viscera have been preserved for further forensic examination,” he added.
No compliant was lodged by the family till filing of this report. Police said they would question Rohit and other family members after the cremations.
