Monday Picks: Trust Me, I'm a Doctor, Leitis in Waiting, Bad Mothers
TRUST ME, I’M A DOCTOR
Series return ★★★½
8.30pm, SBS
What with the endless health advice on the internet, Michael Mosley and his medico friends are surely never going to run out of material for their myth-busting program. This eighth season kicks off with a look at the workout trend that, like the Abmaster and other infomercial fitness aids, seems too good to be true – "exercise snacking". Also on the agenda is teeth enamel erosion, ideal ways to absorb iron, and developments in the fields of gene therapy and prostate cancer detection.
LEITIS IN WAITING
★★★
8.30pm, NITV
Screening as part of SBS' special Mardi Gras programming is this thoughtful documentary about the transgender women of Tonga. Leading the discussion about a religiously motivated prejudice that has infiltrated the traditionally accepting culture is a glamorous and terribly dignified "leiti" called Joey Mataele. With connections to the Tongan royal family, she is a powerful voice in the fight against discrimination. Contrastingly, the story of a young, less empowered leiti is told.
BAD MOTHERS
★★★
8pm, Nine
There might be a distinct lack of grieving going on among these affluent Melbourne suburbanites for the sudden and shocking death of one of their own (even, it seems, from the deceased's husband and best friend), but there’s no shortage of comedy. Having the most fun is Shalom Brune-Franklin as spoilt single mum, Bindy. Her lines are textbook entitled Millennial and she delivers them with an impressively straight face. Tonight, she's in for a rare reality check.
