LUCKNOW: The mosquito menace has suddenly surged in the city with the rise in temperature but the Lucknow municipal corporation (LMC) has been found lax in response and tackling the situation.
No anti-larva spray and fogging has been taken done in most areas. Moreover, in a reality check, TOI found that there has been no impact in areas where LMC claimed to have conducted fogging and spraying. Moreover, big garbage piles, choked drains and stagnant water can be seen in various areas and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. According to the action plan drawn by civic agencies on the order of high court in 2016, the anti-larva spray should be done in the entire city in January and fogging in February. However, so far LMC has covered only few areas. If steps are not taken to accelerate the drive, the mosquitoe menace can become a big trouble in coming days.
LMC environment engineer Pankaj Bhushan, who is also in charge of mosquito prevention programme, said that anti-larva spraying was started in first week of February and three out of eight zones have been covered till date. Fogging has also started in these zones from February 20, he added.
However, TOI reality check found a grim picture in the prominent localities, including Gomtinagar, Indiranagar, Khurramnagar, Jankipuram, Vikasnagar, Nishatganj and Mahanagar, in the zones.
In Jankipuram, drains were choked with garbage. Residents said LMC workers cleaned some drains but left the silt which flowed back in two days. "There has been no anti-larva spray or fogging either," said Radha Krishna, a resident.
