Clean-up drive held at Ullal beach in run up to Abbakka Utsav
TNN | Feb 25, 2019, 04:10 ISTMangaluru: Students of educational institutions under Ullal City Municipal Council limits as per directions of the district administration on Sunday undertook a massive clean-up exercise at Ullal beach.
This activity was a precursor to the two-day Veera Rani Abbakka utsav that will be held from March 2. Vani V Alva, commissioner, Ullal CMC, flagged off the beach clean-up drive in which students participated enthusiastically.
DC Sasikanth Senthil and Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO R Selvamani interacted with the locals and underscored the need for cleanliness as well as the importance of the utsav for the region. With preparations already under way for the conduct of the Utsav, Senthil said the administration will hold the same in a befitting manner. The cooperation of the locals and the organising committee in this regard is essential, the DC said.
The administration will discuss and approve blue print for the stage that will be erected for the utsav in consultation with city police authorities, Senthil said. With an attractive line-up arranged for the cultural events, DC exhorted locals to attend the same in large numbers and contribute to its success. The students and locals picked up and segregated a tonne of waste, including one lorry load of plastic waste from the beach and surrounding areas.
Sveep pledge
The administration that is gearing up for the general elections 2019 also used this occasion to administer pledge to voters under Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme on Ullal beach. Senthil reminded stakeholders present that it is their participation in the upcoming general election that can help bring about change that they as voters’ desire. Selvamani, too, urged the voters to take part in the polls.
