PATNA: Chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar has said his government was committed to maintaining zero tolerance for corruption besides upholding the rule of law and maintaining communal harmony.
Addressing a public rally at Kavaratti, the capital of union territory of Lakshadweep, on Saturday night, Nitish said, “We have zero tolerance for corruption. The state passed laws to confiscate ill-gotten and disproportionate assets of corrupt public servants. The Bihar government has decided to open schools and orphanages in such confiscated buildings.”
Nitish, who is also the JD(U) president, said law and order has significantly improved in Bihar and people now move freely even at night. “We have maintained communal harmony and caste amity,” he said, adding Bihar has achieved double digit economic growth.
The JD(U) president declared Dr Mohammed Sadique, son of veteran socialist leader Mohammed Koya Kunnamkalam, as his party’s Lok Sabha candidate for Lakshadweep seat. “The JD(U)’s symbol – arrow – is familiar to every household in Lakshadweep. The people of the union territory had made JD(U) candidate victorious in 2004 Lok Sabha election. On behalf of my party, I appeal to you to ensure Dr Sadique’s victory by a huge margin in the forthcoming general election,” Nitish said amid applause from the audience.
Speaking on the alleged misuse of Mohammed Koya’s photo by certain elements in Lakshadweep, the Bihar CM said, “It is really disturbing and painful for Dr Sadique and his family members to see some people involved in the multi-crore Tuna fish scandal misusing Dr Mohammad Koya’s photo to save them from disgrace. Use of Dr Koya’s photo in election campaign by our opponents is an evidence of Dr Koya’s popularity even today. It is Dr Sadique who has inherited the social and political legacy from Dr Koya. Only he can carry forward the vision and policies of Dr Koya for Lakshadweep.”
Nitish appealed to all former members of JD(U), who left the party after death of Dr Koya, to come back and join hands to strengthen the organisation in Lakshadweep.
On Sunday, Nitish visited Dr Koya’s graveyard in Kalpeni island before departing for Patna via Delhi. He is scheduled to return to Patna on Monday.
