KOLKATA: A 50-year-old woman died, while her 17-year-old daughter had to be hospital with severe head injuries after being hit by a train on Saturday, while they were walking on the railway tracks near Gate 12 of Barasat railway station.
According to witness, the accident took place around 5.40pm, when Barasat Tarunpally's Soma Chatterjee and her daughter Basana were crossing the railway tracks. "The two seemed to be in a hurry as they walked on the tracks. Suddenly, the mother's legs got stuck in the tracks and she stumbled down. Even as the Down Hasnabad local closed in on them, the daughter tried her best to pull her mother from the tracks, but in vain. The speeding train crushed the mother and also hit the girl, throwing her off the tracks," a local trader said. The GRP took the two to the Barasat district hospital, where Soma was declared brought dead. Basana has been admitted there in a critical condition.
"Despite repeated efforts by the railway to create awareness about the dangers of crossing tracks, people take the risk. The duo was crossing the tracks near the Barasat station when the accident occurred," said a senior Barasat GRP officer.
