VISAKHAPATNAM: Three people, including a woman, died and 11 people were hospitalised after they consumed suspected industrial spirit at Uppara Colony and Swatantra Nagar of Pedagantyada Mandal under Gajuwaka police station limits in Vizag city of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Asanala Kondodu, Vadapalli Appanna and Pendra Appayamma. The dead and hospitalised in the tragedy are ragpickers pigshepherds. The condition of one woman, Vadapalli Ankamma, who consumed the spirit and was availing treatment in a private hospital, is said to be critical.
Inspector K Rama Rao of the Gajuwaka police station K Rama Rao said that the rag pickers found a plastic can of liquid near a dumping yard on Saturday. Expecting that the liquid in the plastic container is alcohol made with mahua flowers due to the fragrance, they took the liquid to their locality and consumed the liquid on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
After consuming the spirit, a few of them complained of sickness and vomiting symptoms. Three people died in the tragedy while they were undergoing treatment on Sunday and the death toll is expected to rise, Rama Rao added.
"Our preliminary investigation has revealed that the group of people had consumed suspected industrial spirit, which is highly intoxicating and toxic," said deputy excise commissioner, Vizag, T Srinivasa Rao. There were no hooch dens and no one was associated with brewing illicit liquor in Vizag city. Samples of the liquid have been collected from the spot and sent to the laboratory for a test, Srinivasa Rao added.
District collector K Bhaskar along with police and excise officials visited the government-run King George Hospital and private hospitals, where 11 persons were undergoing treatment. Bhaskar directed the medical officers to provide the best treatment to all the victims.
"We have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (Suspicious Death) and we will know the exact reasons after the post-mortem reports,” inspector Rama Rao said.
