CHENNAI: A three-month-old boy accidentally slipped from the hands of his mother from a moving autorickshaw and died of injuries at Ayanavaram on Friday night.
Police said Jagan, an autorickshaw driver, was driving his wife Archana, 28, and their son J Yogeshraj to Archana's parents' house in Villivakkam in his autorickshaw when the accident happened.
When they reached Tagore Street, which branches out from Konnur High Road in Ayanavaram, a biker suddenly slipped and fell in front of the autoricksaw. To avoid hitting the biker, Jagan swerved the vehicle to his right and then managed to straighten it. Meanwhile, Archana, lost her balance and Yogeshraj, who was sitting in her arms on the back seat, slipped out and fell on to the road.
Archana screamed for help and as soon as Jagan realized that the child had slipped, they parked the vehicle and rushed to the child's side. Yogeshraj was lying unconscious and suffered severe injuries to the skull.
Passersby immediately called the '108' ambulance and the child was taken to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital in Egmore, where he died despite treatment at 2am on Saturday. The child's body was sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for autopsy.
On information, the traffic investigation wing police personnel booked a case under the IPC Section 304 (A) (death caused due to negligent driving) against Jagan and further investigations are on.
