CHENNAI: Around 150 cars, belonging to a defunct call-taxi company, went up in flames in Porur near Chennai on Sunday evening. The cars were parked in a vacant land opposite SRMC College.
A spark from a burning heap of garbage is suspected to be the origin of the fire, which then spread to the parking lot nearby.
A security guard noticed the fire, and alerted the fire control. Around 50 fire personnel from Poonamallee, Avadi and St Thomas Mount rushed to the scene and engaged in the fire-fighting operation.
Fire personnel said that most of the cars had mechanical fault and were parked in the premises for over a year. Some cars that were parked near the vacant plot also went up in flames. The exact cause of the fire is being ascertained.
Fortunately, nobody was injured in the accident.
In a similar incident yesterday, nearly 300 cars were gutted in a fire close to the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru, that is hosting the Aero India 2019 event.
