PUNE: An assistant manager of a Hinjewadi-based IT company harnessed the power of ‘Buddy Cop’ to take action against a man stalking her for two weeks.
The moment the woman provided the man’s motorcycle registration number and his photograph, the Kondhwa police swung into action and arrested Amol Vijay Joshi (46), an unemployed man who lives at Shelarmala in Katraj, on Saturday.
The woman, a resident of Tilekarnagar in Kondhwa, takes a private bus to work from the same spot daily at 7am. “For a fortnight till February 22, a man riding a motorcycle harassed me outside my society till I boarded the bus,” she stated in her complaint.
The woman initially ignored him, but a colleague advised her to get a family member to accompany her to the pickup point, police said.
According to the complaint, on February 18, the man tried to strike up a conversation with her, but she ignored him. She then approached the Kondhwa police station, where an officer advised her to make a note of the man’s vehicle registration number.
As per the complaint, on February 21, the woman noted down the registration number. The next day, she saw the man waiting by the pickup point again. She captured his photograph and shared details of the incident on the Buddy Cop WhatsApp group.
“A police team from rushed to the spot and identified Joshi by the photograph and brought him in for questioning,” inspector Mahadeo Kumbhar said.
“We sent the woman his photograph and she confirmed that he was the man stalking her. She then came to the police station and registered an FIR under IPC section 354(d) (stalking),”Mahadeo said.
“We issued a notice to Joshi and told him to report on Saturday for questioning. He denied stalking the woman. We then took a call and arrested him,” Mahadeo added.
“Joshi claimed that he was planning to start a vegetable business and was looking for a suitable place near the housing society where the woman lived. Joshi was produced before a magisterial court and later released on bail,” sub-inspector Vishnu Wadkar said.
