Surat: A group of women doctors will celebrate International Women's Day in a unique way in the city on March 8. The group’s Vama Wellness Centre For Women by then would have conducted health check-ups of 15,000 women, including 850 Adivasi girls. The doctors have been giving free medicines to women for different ailments and also creating awareness among them about cervical and breast cancer.
Dr Rupal Shah, gynaecologist, told TOI, “Our team consisting of four doctors would have treated at least 15,000 women by March 8 from January 16, 2019. We honour women by providing them the gift of good mental and physical health.”
Other members of the team are Dr Ami Yagnik, general surgeon, Dr Deepa Patel, physician, and Dr Trupti Patel, psychiatrist.
The group began its health drive on January 16, 2019 and so far has covered more than 10,000 school and college-going girls in 1,500 free health check-up camps where they were examined for breast and cervical cancer and gynaecological sonography. The group has also been organizing seminars on reproductive health, menstrual health and hygiene, healthy diet and fitness for the women. The group held a health awareness seminar for 850 Adivasi girls of Rutambhara Ashramshala in Dang some time back.
The group recently organized two health camps at Linga and Nadagchond villages in Dang district. Some 410 women availed of free health check-ups and received medicines for their ailments. The Vama Wellness Centre For Women has since January 16 treated around 1,500 women in rural areas for their gynaecology problems.
Dr Shah said, “Our goal was to treat 10,000 women but when we crossed the figure of 11,500, we thought why not provide the benefit to 15,000 by International Women's Day.”
