Oscars 2019: Olivia Colman Wins Best Actress

Olivia Colman reigned supreme at the 2019 Oscars in one of the biggest upset acting victories in recent memory.

At Sunday night's Academy Awards, Colman took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her commanding performance in The Favourite. It was the first Academy Award win and first nomination for the English actress.

Colman's win meant another loss for Glenn Close. The legendary actress was expected to win her first Oscar after seven tries for her performance in The Wife. Close, in fact, had won numerous major precursor awards over the last few weeks, including at Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Colman, however, took home the Best Actress trophy at the BAFTA Awards -- a win that turned out to be more of a canary in a coal mine than many pundits expected.

Colman's turn as the capricious Queen Anne made her an awards season favorite, earning her a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress in a comedy, as well as a Critics' Choice nomination for Best Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. The English actress will cement her status as Hollywood's go-to monarch when she takes over for Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown.

Colman's fellow nominees in the category were Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
