Friday March 1 Picks: The Heights, The Erectionman, Neighbours
FRIDAY, MARCH 1
THE HEIGHTS
Double episode ****
8.40pm, ABC
With vital plotlines and fleshed out characters, this housing commission soap is fast becoming essential Friday-night viewing. Tonight, heavy themes of belonging, loss and loneliness are explored, as the future of the abandoned baby, “Patch”, dangles in the hands of the authorities. Even the minor players have clearly done their homework and every interaction is sincere. This is powerful drama buoyed by great humour and an enormous, extraordinary cast.
THE ERECTIONMAN
****
9.55pm, SBS Viceland
Dutch filmmaker Michael Schaap forces a rethink on the little blue pill designed to aid erectile dysfunction with this entertaining documentary that takes a wider look at the modern male condition. Starting from a personal perspective, Schaap researches the history of male potency and invites a bold and stimulating discussion around the impact of popular culture, pharmaceutical marketing, and the porn industry on both the male and female sexual psyches.
NEIGHBOURS
***
6.30pm, Eleven
For all its teen angst and domestic drama neatly resolved before tea time, Neighbours also echoes some of the more debilitating issues that can weigh upon families, sometimes for years. The particularly complicated bond between sisters is given an airing tonight as Sonya (Eve Morey), and her younger sibling, Jade (returning cast member Gemma Pranita, both pictured), reconnect. The exchange might be limited by the constraints of the genre, but it might reinforce the importance of sisterhood for some.
