A watch and act alert has been issued to residents of Boyatup and Howick near Esperence as a bushfire threatens lives and homes.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the alert at 3pm on Sunday, urging people to be ready to leave or actively defend their properties.

The alert is for people near Muntz Road, Henkes Road, Orleans Road, Shao Lu Road and Bebenorin Road in the Shire of Esperance.

The department said the bushfire started from a lightning strike and is moving in a northerly direction and is out of control and unpredictable.
