Space Kidz India launches payload designed by 10-year-old
Srinivas Laxman | TNN | Feb 25, 2019, 04:03 ISTMUMBAI: A payload developed by a 10-year-old boy, Prathik, to monitor the atmospheric temperature was among the instruments flown in a 1,200 gm balloon launched by Chennai-based Space Kidz India (SKI) on Sunday.
SKI founder Srimathy Kesan told TOI that the balloon took off at 9.45am from a place near Chennai, reached a near-space altitude of 34 km and fell into the sea, 50 nautical miles off the coast.
The balloon was attached to a parachute.
She said that SKI had collaborated with Crescent University in Chennai to develop a payload called CrescentSat, which will test systems for future cubesat missions. The balloon was equipped with instruments designed to study gases present in the upper atmosphere, pollution and remote sensing to study the health and density of vegetation.
"The balloon will be recovered,'' she said, adding that the launch took place a month after the KalamsatV2, which was launched by Isro's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (Pslv) on January 24. As the balloon, imported from the US,soared higher and higher, the band played the famous tune For He's A Jolly Good Fellow.''Sunday's mission was the seventh in the series by SKI of the Near Space Launch Vehicle (NSLV) flights.
