MUMBAI: The second AC local will arrive in Mumbai early this week and will be put up for trials. It has already left the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and is on its way to the city.
The train will be readied for trials by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) once it reaches Mumbai. Another AC train which will be put into operations on Western Railway is expected by March end.
The compartment design and propulsion technology have been borrowed from Train 18, the indigenous semi-high speed train flagged off recently. The new AC local, a little sister of Train-18, has the features of T-18 such as underslung mounted equipmeny (electricals will be below the rake), new generation bogies, seamless connection from end to end of train with interconnecting sealed gangways; and it will carry 9% more passengers than its counterpart having on-board equipment. Commuters will also experience a far smoother ride compared to other trains.
Mumbai got its first AC local on December 25, 2017, which makes 12 trips a day between Virar and Churchgate. The train isn’t operational on weekends for maintenance. It carries an average of 1,500 commuters per trip.
