GURUGRAM: A woman who was allegedly misled by a nurse at the Civil Hospital delivered a baby in an auto on Friday. The woman's family has filed a complaint with the chief medical officer.
Kavita (23) is from Mahendergarh district and lives in Gurugram's Laxman Vihar area. She suffered labour pain on Thurday morning and was admitted to the Civil Hospital around 12 noon. After a medical check-up, a gynaecologist told her family that the delivery would happen by Friday morning.
However, around 10am, staff nurse Nilam allegedly told Kavita and her sister-in-law Sangeeta that it would be at least a week before the baby was born. After this, Kavita was discharged from the hospital around 10.20am on Friday.
She and her sister-in-law boarded an auto from the hospital to go back home. Around 11.15am, they were near the Daultabad railway bridge when Kavita delivered a boy inside the auto.
The auto driver took the women to a private hospital in Bajghera which charged them around Rs 20,000 for further care, according to the woman's family. The delivery at the government hospital would have been free of cost. The mother and the child are still at the private hospital.
Sangeeta said, "When we visited Civil Hospital again, the same nurse told us that the baby would not get a birth certificate from there because the delivery happened outside the hospital."
Dr Pankaj Agrawal, principal medical officer (Gurugram) told TOI, "Our records show that the patient left the hospital without informing officials. A nurse allegedly told them to visit a particular private hospital. The woman was going to that hospital when the crowning started. However, the delivery took place in the private hospital only. An inquiry will be held in the matter and the report will be out soon."
