A largely unknown Ford art car has surfaced for sale in Germany on Mobile.de – and it has a sky-high price tag of… €1,990,000 ($2,250,192)!
The car is a 1983 Ford LTD Station Wagon, and a few decades ago, was transformed by George Lilanga, arguably the most influential East African artist ever. The art is colorful, abstract, and apparently, worth a serious ridiculous amount of money.
It is unclear how or when the vehicle landed in the hands of a German car dealer and just how realistic the asking price is. However, a quick bit of digging indicates that the art car was previously listed for sale for an unbelievable $4.9 million towards the end of 2017. Which, we guess, makes the current sticker price something of a bargain…
The Ford LTD Station Wagon art car is fitted with a 3.8-liter engine delivering 120 hp and mated to an automatic transmission. It’s never been involved in any accidents but isn’t roadworthy. Even if it were, though, driving a vehicle like this on the streets is far from sensible: this car deserves to be displayed in an art museum.
George Lilanga was born in Tanzania in 1934 and established himself as one of the continent’s most distinguished artists. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, he traveled around the world, displaying his artwork across the United States, Africa, Europe, India, and Japan. Lilanga sadly passed away in 2005.
And we’re not judging his work right now, because, clearly, we’re not art experts. Maybe it takes exactly that (an art expert) to appreciate it for what it is, because to us, it’s just an old, undriveable (per the description) old estate that just happens to sport (nice, we guess) art work by a famous artist.
